A Marriage More Beautiful Than A Wedding

Originally published on October 26, 2015

It is amazing how time flies! One moment you are on top of the world telling everyone and anyone that will listen to you how your love asked for your hand in marriage. Then before you know it you are looking at an insurmountable wedding ‘To Do’ list that you have yet to begin to tackle. It is easy to get caught up in the planning of a wedding. Let’s face it, there is a lot to do and it can creep into the other areas of your life and often does. Sometimes the planning gets in the way of the reason why you said yes in the first place. Love, togetherness, and of course commitment. We have all heard or seen the saying, ‘I want a marriage more beautiful than my wedding.’ Truer words could not be spoken.

I have seen many couples get so caught up in the planning, that they forget to take the time to enjoy being engaged. It truly is a magical time in a couple’s life and it deserves as much attention as your wedding day if not more. Why more? A wedding lasts a day; a marriage is meant to last, we pray, a lifetime. It is a commitment that requires your attention even as you juggle all that life entails. Further solidifying the bond of your relationship with your future spouse now as you plan your wedding together will bring lessons that you can use later in your marriage. Lessons such as attentive listening, not just hearing, and understanding. However, the biggest lesson of all is understanding how and when to compromise. Compromise is key when planning a wedding but equally important is taking time away from it all. Spending time together like you did before your engagement will remind both of you why you are marrying this incredible human being in the first place. Nothing, not even wedding plans, should be more important than the reason for the commitment. That reason is love and nothing is more important than that. Unless you are getting married tomorrow, the plans can wait…for a little while at least.

It is so very easy to get caught up in the little details like obsessing over colors, seating plans, and all that comes with the planning of this amazing day. However, the most important thing about this day is the person that will be standing right next to you. Never lose sight of that. I get chills just writing that. Your wedding day will be beautiful, but your marriage and this sacred commitment to love, come what may, is truly what matters the most. Every bride and groom should want a marriage even more beautiful than the day they say ‘I do.’

Next week I will share some tips and advice of how to stay connected to your future spouse while planning your wedding day. Happy planning friends!

Love & Light,

Naomi
